Korah was not sure where she had emerged in the Mortal Realm. Her father's words about her magic rang in her ears but she was afraid of how her powers would react. She knew that they were changing, her powers; she could feel the change going through her veins.
However, she was not completely lost. Looking around, she had emerged in a large park, peppered with Humans and those disguising themselves as them. Looking around, she could see that everyone was bustling.
"All of these...people..." Korah said, gasping.
Some of them were looking at her strangely, as she was garbed in a cloak that was old, brown and tattered--her father's. Knowing that there had to be something nearby that could be of use to her, she searched for a peaceful place where she wouldn't be disturbed. If she could only find a place that was close to nature, close to the reason why Dragons had taken an interest in this Realm in the first place, she would be able to find someone to help her--she knew it.
Looking up toward the sky, she could see tall things called buildings. Her father had drew pictures of them for her before, but seeing them was just as breathtaking as everything else here. But the buildings had lights, lights that blocked the view of the stars. She didn't know where she was, but, she knew that she would have to get to an open place where she could see the stars. She knew that she would be able to see a Dragon then. Where there was natural beauty, there was always a Dragon.
But she didn't know how to journey in this town. She didn't know how things worked at all. She had no Mortal money, although she did bring some of the jewels and gold treasure that her father had collected over the years that he had spent there. However, he had told her to not use it until she had consulted a Dragon on how, because Humans were greedy creatures and they would try to steal it. Grasping the pocket on the inside of her robes as she remembered his words, she knew that she couldn't use it yet.
And to see the stars, she would have to climb to the top of one of those buildings, where the light didn't reach.
Walking to a large gate the she thought looked like the entrance, she tried to gauge which building was the tallest. There was a section in front of the park where Humans were walking and speaking to one another. In a section not too far but that looked different, large machines were passing by. They looked dangerous, and Korah was slightly afraid. She had to get to the buildings, but they were across the way from where the machines were running. She didn't know what to do. She didn't want to run into them, and she didn't want to change forms to fly over them. The Humans looked rather skittish, and she didn't want to scare them or give them a reason to capture and punish her.
Looking across, she noticed sometimes that machines didn't drive by as often. There were gaps in their passage, they were inconsistent. She wondered if she could run across to the other Human walking-section while the machines weren't coming.
"What are you thinking about doing?" She heard a voice, and she jumped, looking around, her robes blowing in the wind. She didn't see anything, and she wondered if the voice had been talking to her at all.
"Korah!" the deep voice hissed, and her mind clicked into motion. She hadn't come here alone...
"Czar?" she said. The Dragon was not speaking any Human language, but was using the growl of the dragons. She spun around, feeling for his location. His aquamarine form was hiding behind a bush in the darkness. "Why are you hiding?" she asked as she approached him.
"I am irregular, and I have no Human form. You will have to pretend that I am a dog of sorts, so that we can function together without being separated. Now, tell me what you were doing, trying to walk into the street. Those machines are cars. They could injure you!"
Korah felt bad. "I'm sorry. I was trying to get to the top of the building."
"Which building?"
"The tallest one."
Czar shook his snout, like he wasn't sure what to do with her. "You want to contact other Dragons?"
"Yes."
"Okay, well. I took the liberty of stealing a collar and leash from a dog nearby. It was rather happy to give it up. Now, put it around my neck."
Korah was uneasy about doing this. Looking at the collar and leash on the ground, she picked up to see it better. "No! I will not lead you around like a common Human slave!" She had no idea that collars were like this. She couldn't believe that there was a contraption like this. And that Czar expected her to use it on him.
"It's the only way that you can pass as a Human with me in the open. When people ask about me, tell them that I'm mechanical and made custom to order."
"Tell them what?"
"I'll remind you when the time comes. Now, put this around my neck, please."
Growling, Korah did so.
"Now, see those white stripes across the pavement where the cars run? That's where you cross, you silly girl. But you'll have to wait until you see that the streetlight is red..."
"What?"
"Again, I'll tell you when the time comes. Now that the leash is fastened on, shall we go?"
Korah, clutching the leash, was being led by Czar. She felt that this was demeaning to him; she would have to makt this up to him later. Crossing the street wasn't too difficult--nothing was so long as she listened to Czar. When the strange yellow apparatus above the cars glowed red, that was when they crossed. And all the cars stopped without any problem.
Czar pointed out the tallest building, leading her around to the back rather than the front. They got all sorts of stares, but Korah repeated the lines that Czar communicated to her, and any questions were answered.
"Why are we going to the back of the building?" Korah asked.
"Pets aren't allowed in most buildings. We're going to have to sneak in while no one is looking to get to the top. Just make sure no one can see us and we should be fine. I'll use my magic to camouflage myself."
"You can do that?"
"I can where there's light. That's my Human magic."
They got in without a hitch, since Czar was invisible, and made their way up to the roof of the building...
