It was such a peaceful day in Tokyo. It was Friday, the day before Spring Break, and everyone was excited, especially Mizuho. As she was walked up to Tokyo University she noticed how happy everyone was. She saw the joy in the students’ eyes as they walked around conversing with one another about the plans they had for break.
Inside was no different; the halls filled with happy chatter. Even the faculty was excited about the upcoming break. In room 3317, students sat down chatting waiting for Mizuho to arrive. The clock read 1:00 P.M. and she walked into the classroom. As she walked to her desk, whistles from the male students echoed throughout the room, which caused the rest of the students to giggle. This was the natural greeting since the beginning of the semester. Mizuho looked above her glasses and gave the boys a glare which caused them to hush, but still snicker to themselves.
“Good afternoon everyone”, she said while walking to the podium in front of the classroom.
“Good afternoon Kazami-sensei”, the students said simultaneously.
“Kazami-sensei, you look extremely beautiful today”, one student declared.
A roar of cheers came from the class and Mizuho smiled while she got her notes out for the day’s lesson. This also was the normal everyday routine, and Mizuho began to long for something more.
She loved her job, but lately things felt off. She missed her mom and her sister more than usual. She guessed it was because Spring Break approached, and the last good memory she had of her family was during Spring Break. They hung out by the beach and built sand castles. Mizuho remembered the feeling of the cool water and sand between her toes. One thing she never figured out was who the person was that her mom talked to while they were Spring Break. Right after that, her house caught fire and her mom and sister disappeared.
She drifted back to reality in enough time to start the lesson before her students noticed that she zoned out. As time passed on she fought to stay focused on the lesson plan, but she really wanted to end class early. She decided to finish and come back to her thoughts after class ended.
“That concludes today’s lesson. You all have a great break,” Mizuho said to her class.
Everyone got their things together and headed out cheering because they had two weeks off of school. Mizuho decided to go her office and grade midterms so she could really enjoy her break. She plopped down, opened up a box of dark chocolate Pocky, and began to think. She sat at her desk for a long while with midterms to grade staring back at her. She lingered between reality and the solitude of her thoughts.
My life has to mean more than this", she said to herself as she got swept away into her daydreams.
