From an early age, Ren's single goal in life was to surpass his sisters.
He was clearly aware of it, though he hid it behind the noble cause of "becomming more powerful in order to protect them".It was true, to some degree that he did want to and that desire increased twenty-billion fold after Rin was killed. It didn't matter that they were both more naturally giften than him, the point remained that they were his sisters and thus women and he being the brother and the man was therefore obligated to do so.
In reality, he hated Rin.
Not that he didn't feel *something* for her, because they were siblings, but if he had to be honest, Ren would admit that the idea of his older sister always detested him.
Her nobility for a realm that was obviously on it's way towards becomming corrupt, her selfless nature, her kind words. They were what inevitable got her killed when the fool of a woman that the she was decided to play martyr.
He didn't blame the dragons like Rei did. He blamed heaven and he blamed Rin.
He loved Rei, though, that much he had never felt any doubts about. She was, effectively, his better half all of the flaws that he could pinpoint in himself were strengths for Rei and he made sure that the favor was returned.
The desire to protect her was just as strong and just as real as the desire to become better than her. It was for her sake that he wanted to do so, especially after she got the blow of being both the heir to the family and a seishi.
It was the moment she was sequestered in the Baek-ho that he made a decision: That by the time he and Rei were together again, he would have be greater than her so that he would never have to see the look of blind panic in her eyes again as the time they'd shut those doors in his face.
For nigh on two hundred years, Ren made sure that he could get by as something other than ''Yamazaki Rin's younger brother" or "Yamazaki Rei's twin/shadow/replacement". He studied furiously to compensate for his lack of talent and more than made up for it with intelligence.
Rin was the Saint.
Rei was the Prodigy.
And Ren would be the Genius.
He forsook all the trappings of normal adolencence and was able to make it into one of Gelsifer's most elite schools nearly two decades ahead of his age group.
And then, some fool of an archangel had thought it an appropriate time for Ren to enter into an arranged marriage.
As if he wasn't under enough stress with school and his family, he now had a finacee to worry about as well.
Not only that, but the girl was one of Tsubasa's personal lackys. He couldn't stand his cousin as it was, and now he had to put up with some that she thought was an appropriate choice for him?
Right....
Complaining to his father had weilded no results, as he knew it wouldn't. The all-too-busy Souke had replied: "Ren, with Rin gone and Rei the next in line to be souke, as well as the Subaru no seishi, it falls to you to provide the family with heirs. If there were a little more power in you then we would have married you off centuries ago, but we decided to wait until you were older, see if you were just holding back or something. As that's not the case, then the only forseeable good you can do for the family is to marry the Toudou girl and provide your sister with an heir. She'll be far too busy to do it herself."
...To say that Ren's ego took a nosedive that afternoon would have been conparing the Kouma Sensou to a school yard fight.
He became even more determined then. Both to suit his original goal and also to prove his father wrong.
By the time he graduated from the academy, The shijin had been imprisoned and the cousin he detest most was now in control of his home layer.
Perfect....
He decided to ignore his bias towards her and accepted to position that she offered him as her main tactian.
He got along well with most of her other suborinates. Akatsuki, Hisagi, but there were a few that he made solid enemies of in the first week alone, whether with his demeanor, his linage, his position or what, there were some people who he automatically clashed with.
Mizuki was the first to defend him at every turn, whether he was in the victim or not.
There was one specific incident that Ren could clearly remember as the one that made him decide that he would never marry Mizuki, despite what his duty to his family was. He would keep the engagement, surely, if only until he could find a way to break that would put the blame much more squarely on her shoulders than his.
It had been just days after Rei had finally fallen and had been made one of the Kings of Hell. By that time, he'd succumb to his father's and Tsubasa's bullying and was now living with Mizuki, though they'd yet to actually marry, much less consumate the relationship. The house had three bedrooms, one of which was used as a joint office and the other two of which...Well....Ren considered his bedroom to be his personal sanctuary, no matter how many times Mizuki got it into her head that the room was just as much hers as his by virtue of their engagement.
He'd come home from meeting with his sister to an assult of magic hitting his senses dead on when he opened the door. Following the lead of it, he came to his room to find Mizuki kneeling by the bed, feverently praying to...someone....
"Mizuki-chan....What in the world are you doing?" She faltered in her prayer, he recognized it as Latin, and looked up as he drew her attention.
(So....Er...like the entire rest of this got cut off so...I don't feel like finishing, I'm heartbroken cause I had already and now it's all gone. Judge from here if you like.)
