The two of them strolled through the small town on a night that seemed to take forever to come. They had been running for what seemed like weeks, and it was only a day ago they felt safe enough to walk. On the end of the street they noticed a lone house. "Potions." was written on the wooden sign in front of it.
"We ran for so long, do you think were safe?" hissed the smaller one.
"Safe enough, for now..." the larger of the pair snorted. "Now shut up, those damnable beasts of his are probably with him, I don't want to be found."
The pair made their way in to a potion shop, empty of customers. The elderly clerk wasn't caught off guard by awkward serpent-like appearance, by by their timid behavior as they approached his counter.
"Can I help you with anything." he said, trying to not sound stern.
"We need transfiguration potions, now!" Hissed the larger of the two. His forked tongue flicking out his mouth as he gestured toward himself and his comrade.
"Ah yes, and what will be the purpose of the disguise, store policy bequeaths I ask so that we may provide a potion designed to aid the user in their endeavor." the old man said, taken aback by the blunt rudeness of his current patrons.
"Protection..." squeaked the smaller of the two, obviously distressed. Panic had begun to surface in the pair.
"Indeed. And how will you be paying for these?" said the elderly man, now desperate to remove the pushy serpents from his store. He began to examine the pair, noticing nothing on them but gloves, worn leather boots, and chain mail with a cryptic marking spread across it. Upon further inspection he saw the scabbard with sword sheathed at the waist of the larger, and several knives on the sides of the smaller.
A deadpan look spread across the face of the larger serpent-man, as his slit eyes began to beam right at the old man. The old man's brow began to wrinkle, beads of sweat began to protrude from his face.
"Who said we were paying, if you value your life you scaleless twit you get us those damn potions." the large one roared as he seized the old man by the throat.
"Let... me... go..." the old man said as he struggled, "Please don't do this..."
"Papa, what troubles you." said a young woman emerging from the back of the store. She saw the larger serpent-man suspend her grandfather in the air, hand around his throat. "PAPA..." she shrieked.
"Run child, hide. Go now." the old man said, watching as the smaller ran to grab the girl by her blond hair.
"Let me go, or I'll..." she said, before she was silenced by a blow to the stomach by the smaller serpent-man.
"Hurry, we have to go now." said the smaller one, placing his knife at the young women's throat.
"Please, I'll make anything you want, just don't hurt Nani." the old man cried, tears beginning to well up in his eyes.
Before the larger one could respond he noticed a drop in the temperature caused the old man's tears to become frozen on his face, and his breath became visible with last words he spoke.
"He's coming for us." cried the smaller one. Suddenly the girl bit his hand, causing him sharp pain. She began to run upon him loosing his grip.
"Forget her!" yelled the larger before he could chase after her. "He's here!!!"
He suddenly tossed the old man across the counter, and commenced to pull out his weapon. The smaller did the same, brandishing two knives, there eyes focused on the entrance to the shop.
The old man hit the ground with a sickening thud. His granddaughter began to run to him from her hiding spot but was stopped dead in her tracks. He motioned to her to stay hidden, and she took refuge in a large cabinet. She cracked the door so she could see what was happening.
As the pair held there weapons, they could feel the steel growing colder and colder in there hands. The larger one swallowed as a an icy fog entered through the slowly opening door. There stood Ilreg, obviously displaced, but his cruel and malicious smile ever present. Followed by him wee his faithful servants Faf-ris and Cer-Dra.
"How, how is this possible, we ran for days to escape, you hadn't even realized we left our post. How is this possible!" the larger one cried as he slowly back away.
"With me all things are possibly you sick, cowardly wretch, plus among all the odors in this foul realm, yours was strongest." Ilreg said very sharply.
"No, I won't go without a fight." the larger one cried charging toward Ilreg, only to have his boots frozen to the floor of the shop.
"To fight means we are of equal standing. You are a worm, and I a god in comparison, this isn't a fight, it's punishment for your disobedience." Ilreg said, as he slowly froze the serpent-man's body. Frozen his in place, the larger watched as Ilreg walked up to his extended blade. Ilreg stopped at the edge of the sword. "Any weapon in the hand of a coward is a waste." Ilreg said as he form a blade of ice in his hand. He suddenly and viciously commenced to decapitate the larger serpent-man.
"AHHH!!!!" the smaller shrieked. "Master... I...I... he made me run with, I'd never betray you... you know it to be true." the smaller one plead before Ilreg snapped his fingers and sicked his Beasts upon the smaller one. The two of the easily overwhelmed him as he tried to make his escape. As they tore him apart Ilreg watched, "The only thing worse than a coward, is a lying coward." Ilreg said spiting on the floor near the body of the decapitated serpent-man, walking away as it froze.
Nani watched the whole thing transpire, and she remained silent as Ilreg walked toward the door.
Ilreg continued his walk until his stride was broken by the old man who clung to his leg as he past his broken body. "Thank you sir... I must find a way to repay you..."
How dare you touch me you filthy worm!!!" Ilreg howled as he picked the old man up. Suddenly Ilreg conjured a large spike of ice and placed it through the wall. "You want to repay me, then hold me in you heart for I am the frigid touch of finality." Ilreg cruelly, as he shoved the old mans broken body onto the spike, the sharp edge easily sliding through his back, protruding through his chest as he hung. Blood specked on Ilreg check, he wiped it off as he continued near the door. "Dispose of the other creature and let's be off." Ilreg said, turning around as he noticed a small shriek coming from the cupboard.
"Leave we must my darling..." said the voice in Ilreg's head.
"Yes my mistress." Ilreg said as he began to strain. The pain had started to take him, "Come you two, we must find a tear, I need to return home."
His servants followed as they licked their chops. After a few moments they were gone and all that was left was the bloody pools of water left from the serpent-men's cadavers, and the body of a broken man hanging from a spike of ice.
Nani burst from the cupboard when she was sure the horrid beings were gone. As she ran over to her grandfather she wept and could bare;y stay steady. She fell near his corpse and began to weep, and as her tears hit the floor, so did her grandfathers blood, from the tip of the spike.
"We ran for so long, do you think were safe?" hissed the smaller one.
