Death sees a being as dead when the soul (spirit) leaves the body. The spirit will not leave until the body is unable to physically carry it or the vital bodily processes are stopped (being killed). The soul will generally leave the moment the body is dead sometimes lingering for a few seconds. Peaceful deaths are the most common when it comes to holding a lingering spirit, in the most lengthy cases the soul stays till burial or cremation. Violent deaths seem to expel the soul, though the soul will stay in the place it was ejected forever unless transported. All of these deaths show up on Death's list as Reversible or Irreversible death. This way he can be there to collect the soul with minimal out of body lingering, as it can wear down the spirit to exist in the mortal realm without a body.
Reversible and Irreversible Death.
Irreversible death: A death is only irreversible when the soul has no chance of staying in the body, or the body is so destroyed so that there's nothing left for the spirit to go back to. Violent deaths are the most common deaths found under this category.
Reversible Death: Any disease is put in this category, since a cure can always be used. Poisonings and such are also in this category. In other words, if there is the chance of being saved or cured your death is still reversible. There are also cases that remain reversible after the body has ceased function. This is due to the fact that the souls sees that there is still a chance the body will return. Recitation can be due to certain magical means, Vampirism or even a select few mortal means.
If the soul still feels life in the body still it is common that it will stay. When the body dies at peace the life of the body slowly slips away sometimes even without the spirit's notice. This explains why the soul will linger, in a trance and trying to function normally as it had when alive in a body. But in the case of violent death the life of the body is stolen, the soul ripped out and cast aside. The soul is basically exiled from the body instantaneously. The life energy that does linger stays attached to the spirit, but not as sustenance, it acts more like a drug, it lasts for a second then when it's gone the soul goes through a type of withdrawal.
It is during this type of withdrawal that a spirit does not accept its own death. Some spirits cling to the little lifeforce that is willing it into existence, and it is this energy that allows it to disturb the life of the living by physically interacting with things that it isn't supposed to. However, it is Death's job to find these spirits and remove them as quickly as possible.
