Death sees a being as dead when the soul(spirit) leaves the body. The spirit will not leave until the body is unable to carry it or the body is killed. The soul will generally leave the moment the body is dead sometimes lingering for a few seconds. Peaceful deaths are the most common when it comes to holding a lingering spirit, in the most lengthy cases the soul stays till burial or cremation. Violent deaths seem to expel the soul, though the soul will stay in the place it was ejected forever unless transported. all of these deaths show up on Death's list as Reversible or Irreversible death. This way he can be there to collect the soul with minimal out of body lingering as it can wear down the spirit to exist in the mortal realm without a body.
Reversible and Irreversible Death.
They happen like the name says.
Irreversible death: A death is only irreversible when the soul has no chance of staying in the body. Violent deaths are the most common death's found under this category.
Reversible Death: Any disease is put in this category, since a cure can always be used. poisonings and such are also in this category. In other words, if you might get saved or cured your death is still reversible. There are also cases that remain reversible after the body is dead. This is due to the fact that the souls sees that there is still a chance the body will return. Recitation can be due to certain magical means, Vampirism or even a select few mortal means.
If the soul feels life in the body still it is common that it will stay. When the body dies at peace the life of the body slowly slips away sometimes without the spirit's notice. This explains why the soul will linger. But in the case of violent death the life of the body is stolen, ripped out or however you feel it should be explained. So the soul is basically kicked out of the body on instant. The life energy that does linger stays attached to the spirit, but not as sustenance, it acts more like a drug, it lasts for a second then when it's gone the soul goes through a type of withdrawal. Which is why Death is usually their within a minute if he didn't watch the death for amusement.
