Death wisped into existence in the bustling hall of a big city hospital. The tall gaunt figure seeming only half aware of the people rushing by him, none of them looking at him. He turned on his heels and walked into the trauma department without having to push open the swinging doors. He was accustomed to slipping into open doors as to not bother the minds of mortals, they were far to easily distracted. The room stunk of death...the nurses changed beds that the deceased now stood by. He shook his head.
"These damned hospitals are no fun, just a collection of sobbing souls."
He frowned checking the souls off his list as he gathered them, it was funny how they always seemed to see the light as he opened the passage to the spirit realm. Each time he checked a name the portal opened before that specific spirit. It was a redundant job but it was his. He just walked up to the dead..tapped them, tell them they died and checked them off. Said soul usually jumps from his presence before stepping into whatever they believe the portal is. The fun part was when they refused. Like this guy decided he would.
Death walked up to an obvious gunshot wound, obvious because the doctor was still trying to pump life into his dead body. The lost soul stood looming over himself in shock..his form shaky and, without the energy required to exist in this realm, was quickly deteriorating. Death strolled over to him.
"Okay mortal, your time is up..step through please"
The man looked into Death's face and stirred, the portal opening beside him. He opened his mouth and let out a pained cry, relative to a howl before stammering. "No..No I don't wanna die...I..I..my daughter..I hav.."
Death grinned..it was a pathetic thing to not accept ones death..especially when you were looking on your own expired body.
"Your past dead Boy. Now please, if you stay here..your soul will wear down."
The dead man glared, his refusal to accept what had happened becoming a rage. Without much purpose the spirit lashed out at Death only to be wrapped in the shadow coming from his feet. Sa'Des appeared behind him. "Why do you give these fools the option Master..why not hurl them into the passage and be done with it?"
Death laughed as she hurled the man into the open portal which closed directly after the soul entered. Death smiled and turned, walking away from the scene as the struggling doctor gave up on the patient. It was amusing to see these mortals deal with death. They fought to revive the man even after his soul had been ejected. Not only that but the soul fought as well.
Sa'Des spoke on the subject.
"These mortals..they have no respect, lashing out at the master like that. I should've eaten him"
Death smiled.
"You were born once as nothing more then a mere mortal Sa'Des. Or is it that you want to forget that you got your name from your living memories?"
Sa'Des frowned and slunk into his shadow, her anger sent a shiver up his spine, she tended to drain a bit more of his energy out of spite. As he shivered from her action he scowled, wisping into a new place. He paused to check his list with a happy grin.
"I collected exactly 156 souls in that hospital, the peaceable souls are boring."
He frowned, he was behind nearly a thousand already, the confrontational ones always took too much time. He walked into the home before him, the door was wide open as mortal police ran through it and back. The inside completely painted with blood. Death took a long sniff and his eyes shone happily.
"Death is in the Air"
