Youkai groups themselves into tribes by type: Canidae, Felidae, Cervidae, Urisidae, Leporidae, Squamata, and Aves.
Each Youkai type is valued for something in particular; each type of youkai have a human form (which exists with or without ears), and an animal form, which reflects the choice that they made within their species that reflects their personality.
As youkai, they can choose whatever form they want for their human form when they reach adolescence. As youkai, they can change into a youkai "half form", which is their human form with distinguishing animal attributes such as ears or a tail.
When youkai are children, they cannot do anything more than speak. As cubs, pups and younglings they do not possess the magical control that is necessary to settle on a human form. They are raised to take care of themselves as animals before they are taught the mannerisms of Mortals.
There is a distinct difference between Youkai for the Mortal Realm and those from the Mythical Realm: Youkai in the Mortal Realm, with so many animal species surrounding them, are born as animals and must learn to control enough magic to have a Human form.
However, in the Mythical Realm, it is the opposite; they are born as Humans and select an animal form while growing up. There is a definite rivalry between Youkai from the Mythical Realm and those from the Mortal, and while it isn't violent by any means, they take it upon themselves to distinguish from one another.
