The great Seirei are spirits that were created by the Shijin in order to help them understand the emotions that their creations feel. They felt that they could only make something that they understood, and so this was their endeavor to prove to themselves that they understood the motivations behind what each race did as a whole. More specifically, they were worried about being out of touch with Humans, especially after the Great Hunt occurred, which they had not forseen as an event.
The Seirei are exactly the same as the usual spirits that in habit the bodies of all other beings in the Realm, save their ability to inspire their base emotion within others. Because they are perpetually reincarnated, they are born and go through life exactly the same as any other being, depending on what race they are born into. These spirits are not malevolent; they simply influence the direction of the emotions of beings that they are near, usually when they themselves are experiencing something--that is their unique ability.
Usually, when a Seirei is born, they do not have a recollection of their abilities or past lives. As they grow and develop they recover these memories depending on the hardships they endure during their lives. There are some Seirei who have "skipped lives"--that is, gone through an incarnation completely without awakening. However, in the life after, when recovering their powers and memories, they recall what transpired in that previous life.
The process of regaining one's memory for Seirei is quite different from those like Celestials, who recover theirs all at once. Memories of the Seirei tend to appear in pieces, and there are Seirei who have almost been driven completely insane by it due to the recovery of their memory at a young age. There have been Seirei who have recovered their memory in large chunks or even instantaneously, but it is usually in the case of those born as part of the Celestial race, and does not ordinarily happen this way for other races.
The Seirei, contrary to the belief that exists in many Realms about them, do not possess any beings at all. Their consciousness is always the same, melded with the experiences of their current lifetime. No race of being is exempt in being born as a Seirei, and in most races those discovered to be Seirei are revered.
In terms of fighting ablities and magical capability, they are capable of doing whatever their current incarnation is born with/taught/is learning to do. Not all Seirei train in the same capacity, either.
There are three catagories that the Seirei can be put into: "The Positive", that inspire emotions that for the majority of all purposes do not cause trouble; "The Negative", whose emotions typically affect people in a way that can cause issue; and those "In Between", who have the potential to do both. All of the previous terms were coined by the Celestials, and Seirei do not refer to themselves by these categories.
The Seirei are gifted with the ability to inspire their given emotion in other beings, much like Cupid, a famous Paladim who was the incarnation of the emotion of love. They are also empathic and can identify the emotions represented by themselves and other Seirei, which can be a problem for Seirei beginning to recover their memories as they tend to become overwhelmed easily.
Along with this comes the negative impact of being one of the Seirei: That is that these beings feel their own emotions several times more severly than other beings. As such, those born into the "negative" and "in between" emotions usually develop the habit of surpressing their emotions in order to keep complete control over themselves in various situations. Usually, magic helps with this. However, some incarnations of the Seirei are born without magical affinity, and that makes it all the more difficult for them.
The goal of the Seirei themselves--once they come into their own memories--are to find those who resonate with their emotions and interact with them. These results could predictable or vague, depending on the Seirei and who they are at the point that they recover their memory. With the "Positive" emotions, the goal tends to be more distinct; spreading their emotions and helping others to feel what they feel is usually their goal.
For those who have a "Negative" emotion, the goal doesn't necessarily have to be bad. There have been "Negative" emotions who have identified with others who feel what they feel, and used that to help others as well. However, because those emotions tend to be more intense, sometimes Seirei for these emotion seek more than anything else a more effective way of handling it for themselves. It's very easy for negative emotions to take a person over and produce negative results so caution must be exercised at all costs.
For the emotions in between, they can easily be positive or negative, depending on the factors in which they are felt. It's very easy to go too far, even if your intentions are good.
The raw power that the spirits posess is potentially enormous, as such, they are frequently tools that are sought after in battle. In petty skirmishes, they have also been sought for by Humans to confuse enemies by controlling their emotions from afar. Perhaps the most grevious case of such occured in the Kouma-Sensou, where all but two of the Seirei were captured and sacrificed by Heaven to awaken the Maryuu-ou, the dead corpse of a Dragon that had been used in battle by the Ha-ou of Hell when alive.
The result: that the being experienced his emotions several hundred times more strongly and was able to sense the emotions from beings spanning across the Realm, which quickly drove him completely insane. Because he was also able to inspire the emotions of Love, Happiness, Terror and Courage into any being he wished, he was the weapon that sparked one of the greatest conflicts between the Realms of Heaven and Hell in their history. The casualties and consequences were so great that it was declared by a unanimous decision by all 14 of the remaining or new Kings--Heaven being led by Miyazawa Chiyo and Hell being led by Sanada Tomoyo--that the Seirei and any magic containing their spirits were off limits in battle from then on.
The Seirei are as follows, listing the current if known. If the current incarnation is unknown, then the last known incarnation and their way of death is listed.
