The Mortal Realm is the first Realm created by the Shijin. The Shijin reportedly conceived the idea of creation from the desire to no longer be lonely in the concept of existence. It is a known fact in Heaven that Genbu at first objected to the idea of creation; she had, at the time, been wary of whatever force or concentration of magic that had spontaneously creation the Shijin themselves.
However, the objective apparently didn't hold out for long.
The Earth, as Humans named it, was first populated by animals of all kinds. The atmosphere on Earth at the time was beautiful and lush, the animals thrived. The Shijin watched the animals as they functioned, and learned much from the various animals that graced the Realm.
When the Shijin had learned all that they could from the existing animals, Kouryuu suggested the idea of the Humans, whose unlimited potential through interaction with the Realm around them scared the Shijin.
Not ready to unleash such a potential, the Shijin appeased Kouryuu's boredom by creating creatures based on the idea of "Half and Half". Thus, those creatures now considered mythical were created. Youkai were the first, then Centaurs, Mermaids, Werewolves, etc.
These beings changed their environment as well, creating primitive weapons for hunting "wild" animals.
It was then that the Shijin introduced the Elemental Spirits to the Mortal Realm. The creatures of the Realm began to worships them as lesser gods and goddesses.
It was a while before the Humans were made, and when they were introduced to mingle with the creatures already living on Earth, things melded smoothly. Humans and all other creatures worked together to live with one another.
That is, until Humans heard of the usefulness of some of the portions of Mythical creatures. They began to ambush the other creatures of the Realm for their own sport. The horns of Unicorns, the hides of Centaurs, the scales of Mermaids, etc. This attempt to capture and kill mythical creatures for their bodily assets was known as the Great Hunt.
They waged a war with the mythical creatures almost until they died out from extinction.
By the time that this was happening, the Celestial Realm had only just been created. The first eight Angels were bidden to help protect those who were being persecuted, and they were being protected as much as possible.
It was at this time that the Draconic race had been exploring the Mortal Realm during a deal made with the Shijin, and their leader, Dai-gon, agreed to allow the Mythical creatures that were being hunted to reside in the Draconic Realm without fear of being hunted.
Thus, the mythical creatures were vacated, Humans solitary in their existence on Earth, and those that still exist in the Mortal Realm by choice resent Humans greatly. This is is also the reason why Celestials were charged with the task of watching over the Humans and looking after them; the Shijin realized that they would destroy everything that they would come in contact with if they were left to their own devices. This is also one of the reasons why Celestials look down on Humans anyway.
Continuing with their existence Humans, who were now without major ties to the magical world, sought out the last resources of the realm so that they could rise to power. Many sought to borrow magic from the elements that had been with them from the beginning. To help regulate how often Humans could come into contact with the Elements, the Shijin created the Elemental Realm, so that the spirits could be at peace when need be.
Yet and still, Humans continued to misuse the Elements' power, knowing that they now had a permanent place to be found. The Elemental Spirits, angry and hurt at being used for the purpose of so much destruction, destroyed their own realm, hiding themselves away in the crevices of the Earth so that they could not be found.
And with that, all magic retracted itself from the Mortal Realm.
In recent times, all magic is passed off as a myth in the Mortal Realm, and they have limited access to it. Humans have devised their own sorts of magic in some cases.
