I'm not sure when Rei is actually going to get her butt on here so that she can post this, but this is generally what the summary of her characters' ending is. She didn't give me any real detail, so I apologize for its short and vague nature.
This is what I want everyone to use when referring to their absence.
This was what she told me online, in case you felt it a requirement to hear to source. Of course, it's mixed in with things that are on the site.
After empty threats exchanging between Ren, Rei and the Yamazaki family, the Byakko no Ichizokou, no actually solution had been met. As the youngest and most recently born of the group, the Yamazaki demanded that Ren return to Heaven to either take up the mantle of Byakko or to hand over his child in exchange for his excommunication from the family at large. Sanada Tomoyo nor Ren were willing to do this, and the plan from Rei to circumvent this was to have the remaining family vote for Ren to continue to be the Head of the family to avoid having to give up their child. Ren did not make a decision on whether or not they would do this until he was confronted by his twin about taking responsibility for his lot in life.
He did not make his decision until after his son was born. He was a becoming a distant father and husband, and his wife had already removed him from her household. He was only seeing his son when his wife brought him over the visit, and Rei's constant naggings weren't helping either. They had spoken to a few members of their family, and had gotten only a few to vote him Head of the Family. This being said, it was not quite enough votes, and he was starting to get the feeling that he would have to convince those who would not normally vote for him that he was the right choice. He was sure that he would be able to persuade his mother, and he began working on strategies for the others. He wanted his life back, and that would include facing off with his family as quickly as possible.
After a time, however, his relationship with his wife began to grow worse, with a threat of permanent separation. Knowing that his status with his family would not get any better than it was at the time, Ren and Rei made the decision together to attempt to do things the right way. If they did not work out, they would confront their father, and do whatever it took to convince him.
They ended up confronting their father, who had been the number one advocate for taking Ren's child before making Ren himself head of the family. Ren had disgraced himself by abandoning his home; Rei was already dead to him as a fallen who had opted out of her family responsibility. She had been a black sheep as far as they were concerned anyway.
Hatori, the angel in question, challenged the two twins to a battle to decide their fate since they insisted upon ignoring the rules of the family. They were of no use to him, and they had committed too many transgressions to be allowed to continue living.
While fighting their father, Ren and Rei both had use their magic to the fullest potential; their father was much older and experienced than they were, having been a first generation angel. While fighting, they both tapped into their joint pact with the ruling spirit of thunder, exhausting the magic there and breaking the seal conjoining them. The Spirit vanished, leaving both Fallen alone and magicless. With no magic to defend them, Yamazaki Hatori--their father--ended the lives of both Yamazaki Ren and Rei, reclaiming the mantle of Head of the Yamazaki that had originally been his to begin with.
Hopefully, we'll see the particulars of this soon. I'll be putting this up in the timeline when I reach that point.
